Having to sit in jail to await trial or the resolution of the case, can be a painful experience for both you and your loved one. In fact, for many of our clients, this is usually their first experience in jail at all, making it an almost traumatic situation even if the case goes their way. However, just because they are behind bars does not mean you cannot ease their anxiety.
1. Write Them Letters
In the age of digital technology, it may feel strange to pick up a piece of paper and write to someone. However, when you are incarcerated, getting an old fashion letter often means the world to them. Letters allow them to still feel connected to the world outside and gives them a healthy release for all of their anxiety. Additionally, knowing that someone took the time and energy to write to them reminds your loved one that someone still loves and cares about them regardless of their situation.
2. Send Them Books
When you are behind bars, all you seem to have is time and nothing to do with it. Reading is often one of the few activities that you are allowed to do in jail. The majority of jails will even let you send books straight from the publisher or online store without you needing to go anywhere. However, most jails do have a limit to the number of books that can be sent so you should contact the jail beforehand to ask about the specifics.
3. Call Them On The Phone
Your loved one will need to talk to those on the outside to keep them sane during their wait. This reminds them of what is on the other side and keeps their hopes up. However, you should never talk about their case on the phone. Every phone call gets recorded and it isn’t unusual for a prosecutor to get their hands on that recording and find a way to use it against you. Save yourself the trouble and focus on what is happening on the news, about books your reading, about how the kids are doing, and other non-case topics.
The best thing you can do for your loved one is to get them out of jail as soon as possible. However, most people do not have that kind of money just lying around for bail.
